What are desiccants?

A desiccant is a hygroscopic substance that is used to induce or sustain a state of dryness in its vicinity. They are primarily used to combat water vapour from the air inside a package, moisture in or on the walls of the package or entry of moisture into the package due to permeation or leakage.

You've definitely encountered them before and you may not even know it! Think of the little sachets covered in "do not eat" warnings you find in a new pair of shoes or the canister sitting amongst your daily vitamins.

Desiccants of all different types are used in a wide variety of industries and range in quality. Some of the most common substances used as desiccants are:

· Silica gel

· Activated charcoal

· Charcoal sulphate

· Molecular sieve

· Calcium chloride
